BUDDY: THE BUDDY HOLLY STORY
Meka is currently featured as MARLENA, MARY SOKOLOV, and a member of the SNOWBIRD TRIO in the Mountain Playhouse production of BUDDY: THE BUDDY HOLLY STORY! This jukebox musical tells the story of the epic, but tragically short lived, rise to fame by Rock and Roll sensation Buddy Holly. While Meka is playing multiple roles and characters, she is setting the stage ablaze as Marlena, the Apollo Theater Host. She's singing the original Isley Brothers and Chuck Berry Hits, SHOUT and JOHNNY B. GOODE. Meka is excited to share how African-American music influenced an entirely new genre of music and generation of artists!
THAT'S A WRAP:
THE COLOR PURPLE
Meka recently wrapped up a run of THE COLOR PURPLE where she played the iconic role of SHUG AVERY. She followed in the footsteps of her friends Elisabeth Withers and Heather Headley, as well as the other icons - Jennifer Hudson and Jennifer Holiday. The role was originally made famous by Margaret Avery in the film adaptation of Alice Walker's bestselling novel. The musical revival tells the tale of Black pain and trauma, excellence and joy! Meka loved performing in the show and is grateful to Chicago Director Daryl Brooks, Choreographer Rueben Echoles and The Phoenix Theatre Company for the wonderful opportunity to tell this incredible story!
THE REVIEWS ARE IN:
If Ms. Fleming's (Celie) force of nature has a counterpart, it is in the brilliant performance by Meka King as Shug Avery, the flamboyant one-time mistress to Mister whose endearing relationship with Celie is a portal to Celie's self-actualization.
